Cascara Sagrada's Potential Health Benefits and Side Effects

Cascara Sagrada, also known as Rhamnus purshiana, is native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America, particularly in the United States and Canada. Today, it is also grown in other parts of the world for its medicinal use as a natural laxative. Native American tribes in the Northwest of the United States traditionally use the bark of the Cascara Sagrada plant to treat constipation. Cascara Sagrada is a time-honored ally in the pursuit of cleansing and rejuvenation.

Derived from the bark of the Rhamnus purshiana tree, Cascara Sagrada has long been revered for its natural detoxifying properties. It contains several active compounds that contribute to its therapeutic effects. Here are some key compounds in cascara sagrada: anthraquinones, emodin, aloin, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic Acids, and resins.

Traditionally, Cascara Sagrada has been used to treat constipation and digestive issues. The antiparasitic and antimicrobial herb is often used in detoxes and parasite cleanses. Cascara Sagrada is believed to be effective against a range of harmful bacteria, including Helicobacter pylori, E coli, and several strains of Staphylococcus aureus. It has also demonstrated antifungal action against Candida.

Cascara Sagrada is generally considered safe for most people, but long-term use (longer than one or two weeks) of cascara is considered unsafe. Cascara Sagrada should not be used as a daily tea as this could cause dehydration and dependence upon the laxative traits of this medicinal herb (2017, January 23 Cascara).
