Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice root comes from the plant species Glycyrrhiza glabra, a member of the Fabaceae family. The Fabaceae family, also known as the legume, pea, or bean family, includes many plants known for their nitrogen-fixing properties. Glycyrrhiza glabra is valued for its sweet-tasting roots and is traditionally used for medicinal and culinary purposes.

Licorice root has a rich history dating back thousands of years and is native to regions in Asia and the Mediterranean. Traditionally used medicinally, particularly in ancient civilizations like Egypt, China, and Greece. In ancient Greece, Licorice was used for respiratory issues and digestive complaints and to sweeten other remedies. Licorice Root is often used alongside other herbs to balance formulations and enhance their efficacy. Wahab et al. (2021) wrote that Licorice is one of the most effective herbal medications for reducing toxicity and increasing the efficacy of other herbal medicines.

Licorice root is associated with the following potential health benefits: respiratory support, anti-inflammatory properties, digestive aid, adrenal support, antioxidant activity, possible antiviral effects, skin health support, and potential anti-cancer properties.

Drinking Licorice root tea daily is not recommended; however, add licorice root briefly to address specific issues or enhance your herbal blends.
