Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Neem (Azadirachta indica), a member of the Meliaceae family, is abundant in tropical and semitropical regions like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal.

Recent research has uncovered numerous biological and pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory. Early investigations confirmed the properties of anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, antipyretic, hypoglycemic, anti-gastric ulcer, antifungal, antibacterial, and antitumor compounds. Although more studies are needed, current research shows that Neem has the potential to assist in the fight against and the prevention of cancerous cells (Alzohairy, 2016). Additionally, Neem leaf extract compounds have shown positive results in the reduction of glucose and overall pancreatic health, as well as a retardation of liver and kidney damage and recovery in the antioxidant system (Islas et al., 2020). More studies are needed; however, Neem shows a promising potential to help in the fight against diabetes.

Neem is traditionally and currently being used in the following applications.

  • Antimicrobial Properties: Neem's compounds demonstrate potent antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses, supporting wound healing and oral health.

  • Skin Health: Neem is known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, making it effective against acne, eczema, and other skin conditions.

  • Dental Care: Neem's antibacterial properties benefit oral hygiene, reducing plaque buildup, gum inflammation and preventing cavities.

  • Immune Support: Neem's immunomodulatory properties may enhance the immune response, potentially aiding in fighting infections and diseases.

It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should use Neem. Studies have shown that extracts from Neem flowers alter the estrous cycle, lower the frequency of ovulation, and may reduce fertility (Gbotolorun, 2008).
